Seagate Brewery

The journey started three years ago, with homebrewing for personal consumption, basic equipment from eBay and small batch starter and bottling kits. Commercial brewing started in April 2020 with a purpose-built Arran-proof shed, fully fitted out to a specific design. The brewing style is unashamedly Belgian with a few Scottish stouts and ales, handcrafted with the finest ingredients and with great attention to detail: the whole process is overseen and regulated in person.

I am a small batch brewer on the beautiful Isle of Arran, with a brew shed in my garden right on the seashore of Lamlash bay. My brewing journey has evolved from personal consumption brewed in stock pots, where I fell in love with the aromas in the kitchen on brew day. Having received positive and constructive criticism from Belgian friends who are themselves brewers and bar-owners, and being a lover of the Belgian brewing ethos, it was an ambition to progress to a commercial enterprise. When the pandemic sent us into lockdown, though not perhaps the perfect time to start a new business, it nevertheless gave me the spare time to build a commercial brew shed to my personal specification. In my brewing tardis I now have two brewing kettles, six large fermenters, and two further small-batch fermenters for test brews and split batches (those requiring differing ingredients post-brew). Besides this, I still find room in the shed for ingredient storage and bottling processes! I brew a range of up to ten small batch beers with seasonal variations, and before the second lockdown was supplying two bars on the island, as well as operating free island delivery for personal orders, and a mail order service. During this second lockdown, I have developed beers for exclusive sale in two island outlets, and have received interest from several others, when they are able to reopen. I am also collaborating with Arran Botanical Drinks Company for a second brewing installation on the island. I am absolutely delighted with the feedback so far, and how far this exhilarating ride has brought me. Thanks are due to family, friends and brewing colleagues for all their help and support in getting me here. Especially the Belgians!
