Ayr is the historic county town of Ayrshire and has long been established as the tourism heart of the county with many hotels, attractions and restaurants built around its stretch of beaches and harbour.
The town is located 37 miles south west of Glasgow down the M77 and is still a popular seaside resort, with a huge sea front and ample parking spread all over town including right on the beach front. It also has multiple train station stops and is a stones through away from Prestwick International Airport. It even has a harbour, so whatever you mode of transport is, whether road, train, air or sea, Ayr can accommodate.
Traditionally Ayr has always been the largest retail centre in the county and whilst change has hit its High Street, in common with every other town in the country, it remains a vibrant shopping hub with major chain high street stores blending in with a plethora of independent retailers in the network of side streets the town boasts.
Ayr is the location to a world famous horse racecourse where many events are held which bring in very high profile entertainment. These events include the Scottish Grand National and the Ayr Gold Cup
Directly on the outskirts of town is the birth place of Robert Burns, Alloway. This peaceful area boasts a museum of the birthplace of Burns, where you can go and visit and arrange private tours. It also contains Burns Monument, Brig O'Doon and Alloway Kirk.
Ayr is a popular day trip tourist destination with plenty to see and do. The beach front offers all the usual shops and restaurants would expect to see including a large kid’s park for family days out. Ayr also has great shopping facilities along its high street with a mix of well know branded shops and
bespoke private shops. Also dotted along its high street are various places to eat, from small corner cafes to fast food chains.
Ayr has three golf courses if you are looking for some entertainment. One of which is rated highly in the best golf courses in the UK – Belleisle. Within those grounds you can find Seafield. The final one is set near the race course and plays over open parkland, Dalmilling.
There are also plenty of other ways to keep yourself entertained in and around Ayr. From outdoor activities such as tennis and boat trips, indoor entertainment from bowling to a show at the Gaiety Theatre and plenty of history to see like Loudon Hall and the Citadel of Ayr. Ayr also holds yearly events that bring in thousands of people from far and wide such as Burns festival – held at Rozelle Park – Tam festival and The Day of The Dead parade along the high street.
