Give a Dog a Bone

Give a Dog a Bone... and an animal a home is a Scottish charity based across Scotland and with a location in Troon town centre.

The charity has two main projects: 1 - to support adults over 60 to afford a rescue pet companion - tackling loneliness in the individual and homelessness for the animal. 2 - Companionship in the community project where free activities are offered for the over 60s and drop in times for the whole community to pop in for a tea, a chat and to meet our friendly companionship dogs! We care about the rising number of animals in shelters and about loneliness in our community. For the past seven years the 'Give a Dog a Bone... and an animal a home' charity has successfully supported the over 60s to afford a rescue pet companion. Where money is a genuine barrier the charity can pay the rehoming fee of any rescue animal and, if need be, continue to support each month with the cost of pet food/insurance. The charity aims to tackle loneliness for the individual and homelessness for the animal. It is a win win situation - the person gets a companion and the animal gets a home! On the back of this success our Companionship in the Community project was launched, with community centres opening in Troon, Shawlands and Alloa. The community spaces are friendly spaces where people of all ages are welcome to pop in for tea and a chat and to meet our companionship dogs 'working' in the community centre! Prior to the coronavirus pandemic we offered a range of free activities to anyone over 60 including: languages for beginners (Spanish/Italian), yoga, crafts, reflexology and reiki. As a result of coronavirus, for the safety of our service users, these activities have had to be scaled back. However, from zoom reiki to companionship phone calls our charity is adapting to the ever changing coronavirus pandemic and continuing to support our service users in a safe and compassionate way. The way in which we operate may be slightly different, but our dedication to helping our community remains constant.
